Surface book 2 vs macbook pro geekbench12/25/2023 ![]() The keys are plush and springy, something we can't say about the keyboard on the MacBook Pro.Īs expected, the lower-specced Surface Laptop 2 fell well behind the MacBook Pro on the Geekbench 4.1 test, but the disparity between the scores is noteworthy. Microsoft's keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience, thanks to its 1.3 millimeters of key travel and 69 grams of actuation force. This round isn't close: The Surface Laptop 2 is the undisputed victor by a TKO. However, while it reached a respectable 321 nits, the Surface Laptop 2's screen is nowhere near as bright as the MacBook Pro's (439 nits). The feature is designed to reduce eyestrain.Īccording to our colorimeter, the Surface Laptop 2's display covers an outstanding 176 percent of the sRGB spectrum, trumping the MacBook Pro (110 percent) and the premium laptop category average (114 percent). When turned on, a sensor automatically adjusts the screen's white balance to match the color temperature of your room. ![]() New to this year's MacBook Pro is what Apple calls True Tone. We were also impressed by the screen's vivid colors and maximum brightness. With a resolution of 2560x1600, the Apple machine has an even higher pixels-per-inch rating than the Surface. The MacBook Pro's 13.3-inch non-touch display is no slouch, either. The Surface Laptop 2 has the same ports as the previous Surface Laptop: a USB 3.0 port, a mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect, and a headphone jack. However, if you're part of the majority who thinks every $1,000+ device should have at least one USB-C port, then the new Surface Laptop will disappoint. If you're in the latter camp, the Surface Pro's selection of ports will do just fine. The 12.1 x 8.8 x 0.6-inch Surface Laptop 2 is a bit larger than the 12 x 8.4 x 0.6-inch MacBook Pro, but the Microsoft laptop isn't as hefty, weighing 2.7 pounds compared with the 3-pound MacBook. Silver and Space Gray are the only hues to choose from, whereas the Surface Laptop 2 is offered in Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue and, now, Black. We also wish the MacBook Pro came in more color options. The familiar aluminum laptop looks sleek and feels premium but its hefty chassis and wide bezels are reminders that Apple's reliable design is in need of a refresh. At $4,200 at the top-end, it's getting hard to justify going with Apple, when the excellent hybrid from Microsoft is right there. The MacBook Pro is a spitting image of its predecessor. Microsoft's laptop actually has a better contrast ratio, but the MacBook Pro easily beats the Surface Book 2 when it comes to color gamut range and accuracy.įinally, the price of the highest-end Surface Book 2 variant still puts it $900 cheaper than a similar MacBook Pro 15. The one thing that the MacBook Pro has that puts it over the Surface Book 2 is the display quality, something that Apple has always paid special attention to in their products. The MacBook Pro's outdated AMD Radeon Pro 560 is outclassed by the Surface Pro 2's GTX 1060, and it's not even close. It's a close race, though, and an entirely different situation when comparing their graphics cards. The MacBook's processor actually edges out the Surface Book 2's CPU in both single-core and multi-core benchmarks, according to Geekbench. For its part, Apple has added the Touch Bar, which might come in handy for adding a few emojis, as PetaPixel points out. This gives the Surface Book 2 unparalleled flexibility, giving owners four modes to work with it. The design of the Surface Book 2 that lets the display detach from the base to work as a tablet is miles ahead of Apple's traditional laptop design, though. Microsoft looks to have succeeded in fixing most, if not all the issues of earlier Surface models while retaining everything that makes them stand out.īoth laptops are about 13 and a half inch at their longest, and both weigh about four pounds, as Digital Trends compared them side by side. The Surface line of devices has always been well-built and creatively engineered, but the Surface Book 2 is something else. ![]() Microsoft's new Surface Book 2, however, may have just taken the crown in the premium, 15-inch portable category. Apple has long justified the price tag of the MacBook Pro 15 by going the extra mile in terms of build quality and engineering. ![]()
